🎥 Equipment

  • Camera or Smartphone – A modern smartphone (iPhone/Android) often works fine if you don’t have a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
  • Tripod – To keep your framing steady at eye level.
  • Microphone – Lavalier mic or shotgun mic for clear dialogue (if budget is tight, at least record in a quiet space).
  • Lighting – Softbox lights or ring light; at minimum, two lights angled to avoid shadows. Natural daylight works if it’s consistent.

🎧 Tech & Software

  • Recording App – Native phone app, Filmic Pro, or camera software.
  • Editing Software – iMovie, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, or even basic apps to trim and compress.
  • File Format – Export in MP4/MOV as per casting directions; label with your name, role, and project.
  • Good Internet Connection – For uploading large video files to casting portals.

👤 Performance Setup

  • Reader/Partner – Someone (in person or via Zoom/phone) to read opposite lines; if unavailable, use a recorded voice (last resort).
  • Markers – Tape on the floor for eyelines and consistent placement.
  • Wardrobe – Simple, solid colors; avoid patterns, logos, or pure white/black that can distort on camera. Dress in the spirit of the role without full costume.

📑 Preparation

  • Sides/Script – Printed or on a stand nearby (not in your hands if possible).
  • Slate Instructions – Know how to slate (name, height, location, agency if requested).
  • Casting Instructions – Double-check guidelines: file size, naming convention, framing, length, deadline.

🛠 Extras That Help

  • Portable ring light stand with phone holder (all-in-one).
  • External storage (hard drive, cloud backup) for large video files.
  • Headphones (for reviewing playback with clear sound).
  • chair/stool if you need seated takes.
